COMMUNITY OFFERINGS

We Take Care Of Us.

The mission of our work reaches far beyond Asian Groceries and Filipino food.

We seek to utilize Harana Market to facilitate conversations and influence policy decisions in favor of the historically marginalized while holding a joyful and inclusive space for those same people. Our work centers the most vulnerable and least resourced.

As we work to counteract the long legacy of discrimination towards Black, Indigenous, AAPI, Latinx, Queer, Trans, Disabled, Poor and Neurodivergent communities, we remain deeply invested and rooted in the intersectional well-being of our people.

SALU-SALO BOARD

Salu-Salo is the Tagalog word for ‘gathering together to eat’. At Harana Market, it means no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Our Salu-Salo board is a ‘give-and-take’ located near the cashier stand at our shop.

It is made up of community offerings (on sticky notes) and facilitates the giving-and-receiving of a hot meal and/or grocery items from Harana Market.

These offerings are available by honor system for any community member, no questions asked. If you’d like to use an offering, pull it from the board and present it to the cashier upon checkout.

This board is community funded. Thank you to everyone who has paid it forward and helped feed someone in our community. If you’d like to contribute, let the cashier know for how much and to whom and we will add it to your bill. You can also add funds via our online ordering portal HERE.

Know someone in the community who could benefit from this resource?

Please help us spread the word!

THE ‘THIRD PLACE’

We recognize the importance of ‘Third Place’ spaces in a healthy community.

Third place’ is a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg and refers to places where people spend time between home ('first' place) and work ('second' place).

‘Third place' spaces are where relationships can be nurtured and grassroots organizing can happen. These spaces are for people to gather, unwind and connect with people outside of their home-work-cycle. They encourage cross-demographic and inter-generational relationship building.

More and more, we are losing Third Place spaces, especially in more rural and agricultural-based communities and especially for Queer, Trans, BIPOC, Disabled and Neurodivergent people. In the spirit of preserving ‘Third Place’ spaces, we offer our space as a place for people and groups to gather. We especially welcome those promoting and uplifting social equity and inclusivity within our communities and those resisting dominant (colonial) culture.

While we appreciate the reciprocal exchange, there is no expectation to purchase anything. For security reasons, please check in with the Market cashier upon arriving.

CHOSEN FAMILY MEAL

The Queer and Trans community is often each other’s chosen family.
Let us feed you.

On Sundays, Queer and Trans folx and anyone who self-identify as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community eat at Harana Market for free. Mention the “community meal” when asked for payment (online orders excluded) and we will cover your hot food meal. This is a no-questions-asked program and we don’t regulate identities.

We’re looking to feed your faces on the honor system and you are the only one who knows if you identify within this community or not.

While these programs are facilitated by us, they’re kept alive by our community.
If you’d like to contribute, let the cashier know for how much and to whom and we will add it to your bill. You can also add funds via our online ordering portal HERE.

Thank you to every person who has contributed to help sustain this program.
